LAC regional forum: Unleashing the potential of data to accelerate SDGs

April 11, 2024

The regional forum of Latin American and Caribbean countries on sustainable development will take place between 15 and 18 April 2024 in Santiago, Chile. In addition to being one of the most essential spaces for evaluating and monitoring the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), it will be a crucial moment for the region to articulate collective responses to current challenges to ensure the acceleration of sustainable development.

Cepei will actively participate in the event and call for intensified joint work in local contexts through its Data Action Plan, which seeks to harness the potential of public-private data initiatives in the context of the data revolution.

The initiative, which was developed thanks to funding from the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), seeks to bring together the private sector and other stakeholders in this journey, which began in 2022 with the first mapping of such initiatives across the Global South. Over the next two years, evidence on the current and potential value of public-private data initiatives in local contexts, specifically in Nairobi (Kenya) and Medellin (Colombia), will be identified and expanded through policy briefs, working papers or case studies at the local level. All this is centralized in a single knowledge platform.

In addition, Cepei will seek to contribute to and motivate the improvement of the quality of the Voluntary National Reports (VNR) submitted by the region’s countries in July, as they are the cornerstone for effective monitoring of progress towards the SDGs. The information and analysis in the SDG VNR Quality Tracker will be brought to the forum to achieve this. This tool allows real-time monitoring of the quality of their reports. It compares them with each other to detect areas for improvement and other valuable information when developing public policies and building this type of report.

Also, emphasis will be placed on the relevance of approving the Global Digital Compact at this year’s Summit of the Future in September to articulate long-term international governance of digital technologies. The opportunity for Latin America and the Caribbean is enormous. Although its countries have established national digital strategies, they have not necessarily done so relatedly or by adopting the 2030 Agenda or sustainable development as references.

As the prelude to the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF) and the Future Summit, the 2024 edition of the regional Forum is paramount for developing the sustainable development agenda. With just under half the time stipulated to achieve the 2030 Agenda, there are still opportunities to get things back on track, bring all parties together, and accelerate the achievement of the SDGs.

As part of the forum activities, Cepei will participate in a series of events where to share the results of its work:
