Data Festival: an opportunity to strengthen multi-stakeholder partnerships and accelerate sustainable development

October 31, 2023

Between November 7 and 9, 2023, the Data Festival will be held in Punta del Este (Uruguay), bringing together the data community to strengthen the use and production of data at a global level and make the most of its power to accelerate the 2030 Agenda.

Seven years away from the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), Cepei calls on stakeholders to join and share the vision proposed by the Data 2030 Action Plan, an initiative created together with PARÍS 21, Open Data Watch, la Global Partnership For Sustainable Development Data y SDSN TReNDS. It aims to harness the transformative potential of data on a global scale to target resources and interventions efficiently at the local level to maximize their impact, through collective projects and initiatives that ensure sustainable development.

In times of multiple crises, it is key to opt for joint initiatives that close data gaps that have existed historically. The Data Action Plan 2030 seeks to address the above from the digital transformation to strengthen data systems, prioritizing their use and production to address climate change and combat gender inequality and poverty.

It is also relevant to redouble investments at the national and subnational levels towards data ecosystems to increase, for example, the production of official statistical information by the National Statistical Offices (NSOs) of each country. In this way, it will be possible to have more and better data capable of supporting not only SDG reporting but the possibility of evidence-based decision-making.

The Data Festival will be an opportune moment to take up the messages left by the SDG Summit last September, such as the need to take the lessons learned and the progress that has been made to date to consolidate a true data revolution that impacts both governments and the private sector and society.

Private sector data to accelerate the SDGs

Cepei will also present the results of the SDG Acceleration Roadmap, an initiative created together with LIRNEasia, the International Development Research Centre (IDRC) and in collaboration with the Local Development Research Initiative (LDRI) of Kenya, the Caribbean Open Institute (COI) of Jamaica and the Center for Continuing Education (CCE) of Palestine.

This initiative mapped 394 data actions from companies in Africa, Latin America, Asia, the Caribbean, the Middle East, and North Africa (MENA) to understand their contribution to meeting the SDGs. The result was the publication of eight case studies that demonstrate that data produced by the private sector has real value for the public sector.

All future efforts are decisive to change the current course of the 2030 Agenda goals. That is why Cepei is calling for joint efforts in a roadmap whose next big moment will be in 2024, during the World Data Forum, which will be held in Medellin (Colombia). Both the private and public sectors must come together and consolidate initiatives that responsibly unleash the full potential of data.
