Cepei at UNGA 81

Sep 18, 2026

Cepei will be in New York during the High-Level Week of the 81st session of the UN General Assembly, contributing to conversations on UN leadership, multilateralism and the future of global governance. As the process to select the next UN Secretary-General moves forward, Cepei will take part in three events that look at different dimensions of the challenges facing the United Nations and the wider international system.

Setting the Tone: Leadership for the UN’s Next Chapter

20 September – 11:45 AM EDT
Aspen Institute & Cepei / New York

Convened by the Aspen Institute, Cepei and Public Interest, in collaboration with the United Nations Foundation and New York University, this closed-door dialogue will focus on the values and leadership philosophy needed to lead the UN effectively in the coming decade. The participants will work towards a synthesis of the values that should guide the UN’s leadership team and a values-based framework that can inform the transition to the next Secretary-General and feed into a wider conversation on the future of multilateral leadership.

Leading the UN Into Its Next Era

21 September – 1:00 PM EDT
Devex Impact House @ UNGA / New York

As part of the track The Multilateral Moment, Cepei will join Debapriya Bhattacharya (Centre for Policy Dialogue) and Minh-Thu Pham (Starling Institute) for a conversation moderated by Colum Lynch, Senior Global Reporter at Devex. The discussion will look at the priorities, partnerships and reforms that could shape the UN’s next era, including how to get development back on track, how the organisation needs to adapt to a more fragmented multilateral system, how the perspectives of the Global South can be better reflected in its agenda, and what it takes to build coalitions for reform.

Remaking the UN: The UN and Its Parts

21 September – 4:00 PM EDT
Ford Foundation Center for Social Justice / New York

Organised by the Ford Foundation and Project Syndicate, Remaking the UN brings together perspectives on the future of the United Nations during High-Level Week. Cepei will participate in the session The UN and Its Parts alongside Susana Malcorra (GWL Voices), Natalie Samarasinghe (1 for 8 Billion) and Shamala Kandiah Thompson (Security Council Report), in a panel moderated by Jo Coburn. The session will discuss the role the next Secretary-General should play in relation to the rest of the UN system and Member States, the constraints the office faces, and what this means for the UN’s place in global governance.
