The dissemination of statistical data as a public good

August 10, 2023

Communication is key to bringing data and statistics closer to decision-makers. We need reliable, high-quality data to promote well-being, address climate change and drive sustainable economic growth. The following whitepaper gathers experiences and insights from NSO communication professionals to strengthen the region’s data ecosystem.

In 2022, the Partnership in Statistics for Development in the 21st Century (PARIS21) and the Center for International Strategic Thinking (Cepei) pioneered the creation of the first Latin American and Caribbean Community of Practice (COP) for Data-Driven Communication.

This initiative brought together the region’s national statistical offices (NSOs) and actors outside the statistical system to share knowledge and strengthen the capacity to communicate data for decision-making.

Principales hallazgos

Although the Latin American and Caribbean region offers an architecture that favors the production of gender statistics and their comparability, the information gap is significant. It requires greater production of information, segmentation, and dissemination, leading to decisions that favor gender equality.

The relationship between the media and state entities as sources has been clouded in recent years due to misinformation, which concerns both due to their nature as public actors. And it was precisely on this topic that another of the CoP sessions revolved.

Fact-checking involves verifying information using various reliable and verifiable sources, such as official reports, academic studies, government documents, statistics, interviews with experts, and other relevant sources.
