Governance for development

We analyze the institutional architecture established at a local, national, regional and global level, to drive sustainable development and monitor progress made in that direction. We also study those interactions that allow the participation of different actors in those processes. Our actions are gathered around 4 core concepts:

  • Priorities in regards to the promotion of sustainable development.
  • The institutional structure created to accomplish the commitments about sustainable development assumed by global agendas.
  • An integrated approach that is both multi-stakeholder and participatory.
  • Transparency and accountability.

Finance for development

There are global worries, agreements and priorities in regards to the financing of development, linked with the 2030 Agenda and its Sustainable Development Goals. Within those discussions about financing sustainable development, Cepei centers its attention on:

  • Implementation of international agreements for the finance of development.
  • The mobilization lines of domestic, public and private resources within countries.
  • The continuity and change of international flows of economic resources to finance development, making particular emphasis in private flows, philanthropic contributions and impactful social investment.

Data for development

In a time of data revolution, where the capacity to make the most of information is bigger than ever, we are looking at generating knowledge and offering tools that will help decision making processes based on evidence through 5 core concepts:

  • Big Data
  • Ecosystems and open data
  • Specialized studies
  • Strengthening of capacities
  • Promotion of narratives based on data

In order to achieve our institutional objectives, we generate tools and create knowledge for sustainable development stakeholders through 4 core concepts.

Information and Knowledge

Compilation, analysis and outreach of information based on evidence that contributes to make global processes on sustainable development better their quality.

Evaluation and Impact

Design, promotion and the launch of methodology that helps evaluate the reaction of global agendas on sustainable development in different scenarios.

Development of capacities

Creation of knowledge oriented to strengthening the skills and competences of different stakeholders for the implementation of policy and actions in support of sustainable development.

Research and Analysis

Creation of knowledge around governance, finance and data through research based on evidence and oriented to support decision making process meant to achieve the sustainable development goals.

Initiatives

Nowadays in Latin America, sustainable development stakeholders have limited space for interaction and continued dialogue, since silos based work is still a trend within this line of work, both on the national and regional levels. Therefore, putting a multi-stakeholder approach into practice is not as simple as it may seem: the enabling environment can encourage an active involvement of non-state stakeholders including advocacy, accountability and transfer of knowledge.

We seek to build and transfer capacities through a community of practice that promotes the 2030 Agenda in regional and national scenarios of Latin America, focused on three main issues: institutionality for implementation, multi-stakeholder partnerships and enabling environments.

COUNTRY PROFILES

The national framing in which the processes of implementation of sustainable development and the Agenda 2030 take place in Latin American countries are of fundamental value to put all efforts into context. As an introduction into said frames, we have created a group of profiles that include the necessary information to understand their institutionality, development policy and actions oriented towards the implementation of SDG’s.

POSITION TRACKER - SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT ECOSYSTEM

Since the 2030 Agenda was taken on, we have made a constant follow-up (based on our own methodology) of its compliance by governments in Latin America and the Caribbean who assumed it as part of the global agendas on development. As a result of this work we have created material that is easy to access and allows an observation of the national and regional progress towards an implementation of sustainable development, by supporting stance taking, campaigns and actions based on evidence.

MAPPING OF STAKEHOLDERS

Knowing who is taking impactful action on the issues of sustainable development in the countries of the region is essential. That is why we are making continuous follow-up to identify who is working towards the 2030 Agenda.

The mapping, which also serves as a tool to help form alliances for sustainable development, has three levels where we present the involved stakeholders in the national, regional and global scenes for the implementation of the global development agendas.

DATA REPÚBLICA

Data República is an innovative and collaborative platform that encourages collective thinking, sharing of experiences and perspectives, teamwork and community building among organizations from multidisciplinary backgrounds.

We provide a digital platform to connect citizens to data, analyze datasets and their relations with the SDGs, and strengthen the capacities of the development actors for evidence-based decision-making.

BIG DATA FOR DEVELOPMENT NETWORK

Created in partnership with LIRNEasia, the Local Development Research Institute (LDRI), the African Institute for Mathematical Science (AIMS), the Centre of Internet and Society (CIS), the Big Data for Development (BD4D) Research Network is a Southern-led partnership with the objective of developing policy relevant research on big data for development that is conceptualized and implemented by Southern organizations. Cepei leads the Latin American Hub.

GPSDD LATAM

The Global Partnership for Sustainable Development Data and Cepei have joined efforts to identify actors from Latin America in order to create synergies that promote the implementation, measurement and monitoring of the SDGs at the national level in the countries of the region. The activities to develop within the framework of the project are:

  • Connection of GPSDD members with stakeholders from Latin American countries
  • Support for the generation of data roadmaps for Sustainable Development (strengths, weaknesses, challenges, gaps and prioritization of actions).
  • Generation of partnerships with national and regional actors to strengthen the capacities required in the data roadmap.

DATA CONCILIATION

Considering the guidelines for data reconciliation prepared by Cepei with the support of the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN), a platform is being created that allows the Latin American Chambers of Commerce to discuss their data contributions to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
