On September 30, 2019, the General Debate of the United Nations General Assembly ended, where 193 representatives of member states of the organization presented their main priorities, concerns and international agenda issues to the global community.
The Governance Coordinator of Cepei, Javier Surasky, makes a brief analysis of the topics that were most frequently mentioned in the speeches given, focusing on the Latin American and Caribbean region: how to move towards sustainable development; how to implement actions that can succeed in the fight against climate change; how to get universal health coverage.
“On the Latin American side, what we found is a continuity of something that we had already seen in the previous period of debates, and it is the division within the region regarding the issue of Venezuela, where we found some countries that continue to call and bet on a peaceful solution. While other countries want to move towards more radical positions and to the use of force, as expressed by those who are in favor of the implementation of the Inter-American Treaty of Reciprocal Assistance”.
