The first SDG Summit is held between September 24 and 25, in New York, under the auspices of the United Nations General Assembly.
This is the first Summit meeting of the High-Level Political Forum (HLPF), which will be held under the auspices of the 74th Session of the UNGA. Its theme will be: “Accelerating the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development”.
The HLPF, the main scenario for the examination and follow-up of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) at the global level, gathers governmental and non-governmental actors. It has met every year since the adoption of the 2030 Agenda at the ministerial level and under the auspices of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC). Since 2019 is the year that marks the end of the first review cycle for the implementation of the SDGs (HLPF 2016-2019), as agreed in the 2030 Agenda, during the SDG Summit world leaders must carry out a comprehensive review of this first cycle progresses, and the definition of measures to accelerate the achievement of the Objectives, 10 years from the date they should be reached (2030).
The SDG Summit will be part of the UN General Assembly at the highest political level, at which high-level meetings on Climate Action, Universal Health Coverage and Financing for Development will also be held. It will be organized around a plenary session and five dialogues on trends that seek to accelerate action to impact the progress of the SDGs: critical entry points to speed up their achievement, measures to strengthen their progress, location of objectives and partnerships for sustainable development.
The leaders will approve a Political Declaration and will announce the SDG Acceleration Actions, voluntary initiatives presented by governments and other actors that seek to speed up progress in the implementation of the 2030 Agenda.
Three special parallel events to the Summit sessions will bring together regional governments, civil society and the private sector.
The meeting will also be the space where the Global Sustainable Development Report 2019 will be presented, a four-year document through which science seeks to provide new ideas for the global achievement of the SDGs.
