75th SESSION OF THE UN GENERAL ASSEMBLY

The UN General Assembly is the only main body of the UN in which all its members are present. It is led by a President elected by the Member States, who serves a one year period. It is the space in which the Heads of State present to the world their main concerns and ideas regarding the international situation. This year, the main theme of the Assembly is "The Future we want, the United Nations we need: Reaffirming our collective commitment to multilateralism. Confronting COVID-19 through effective multilateral action". As every year, Cepei will be monitoring the speeches of the Latin America and the Caribbean countries, during the General Debate, focusing on what they say about sustainable development and the 2030 Agenda.

As a contribution to the General Debate of the 75th session of the UN General Assembly, Cepei analyzed the speeches presented by the 33 Latin America and the Caribbean countries between 2016 and 2019, to identify the references made by the region to the 2030 Agenda and the SDGs.

In their 2016-2019 speeches at the UN General Debate, the Caribbean countries frequently mentioned Climate Change, while those of Latin America focused on Peace and Justice issues. Find the full analysis here (available in Spanish).

We gathered the speeches of the Latin America and the Caribbean countries, which participated in the first day of the General Debate. Their interventions focused on the impact of the COVID-19 crisis, post-pandemic recovery measures, and progress towards sustainable development.

The UN celebrates its 75th anniversary in times of COVID-19 and has been required to adapt to virtual and digital interactions. This situation does not affect leaders delivering their statements, however it limits the several bilateral and valuable meetings that happen at the margins of the General Debate and special events.
