Data Development Stakeholders met in Paris to discuss New Approaches to Statistical Capacity Development

Hosted by PARIS21 in collaboration with UNDP, the Workshop on New Approaches to Statistical Capacity Development, held on 11-12 December 2017 in Paris, brought together members of the Capacity Development 4.0 Task Team* and a range of data for development stakeholders to discuss approaches for improving practices in delivering capacity for national statistical systems. Cepei was part of the discussion contributing with the Global South perspective.

The 2030 Agenda poses important challenges on national statistical systems. The effective and successful implementation of the Global Goals at the country level, requires building and strengthening capacities, specially when it comes to the production and use of SDG relevant data and statistics.

The ‘data revolution for sustainable development’ calls national data ecosystems to expand; new actors are emerging, posing challenges and opportunities to strengthen national statistical systems.

                            Objectives

The meeting aimed at formulating a conceptual framework for analysing new approaches to capacity development (CD4.0) in national statistical systems, identifying good practices and operational mechanisms for implementing them, and defining a set of quantifiable metrics for assessing progress of such implementation efforts.

Outputs

Participants advanced on a consensus on the new statistical capacities required by the data revolution and new data demands, learned from peer knowledge sharing of existing practices and made recommendations on the next steps for the Task Team, until the PARIS21 2018 Annual Meetings.
